GRIS | A L’AME ENFLAMMEE, L’AME CONSTELLEE…
CANADIAN BLACK METAL
8/10 – LUKE HAYHURST

“A L’ame Enflammee, L’ame Constellee…” is the sophomore full length album from Canadian black metal band Gris, meaning grey. Not only is this the bands second album but it is the second album to be released by Sepulchral Productions. Opening track “L’aube” casts a gloomy and atmospheric spell over proceedings and following this the tortured straining sounds of “Les Forges” starts the groundwork on the bands impressive style. Vocally despairing and anguished but musically quite sorrowful and mournful, Gris combine the melodic and the raw superbly as the album takes shape.

Gris pack their music with as much variety as possible and the cold strains of a violin can be heard at various intervals, bringing to mind the work of UK band A Forest of Stars who in my opinion they share a great deal in common both sound and mood wise. The album is superb, emotional, heart felt and depressive and no song sounds truly the same as the last! ”A L’ame Enflammee, L’ame Constellee…” is proof that black metal doesn’t have to be all Satanism, guitar onslaughts and raw aggression. Instead subtlety, grace and an omnipotent sense of dread and gloom can win the day!
